First Post! Exciting!

Welcome, welcome.  This is a pretty exciting time for me.. I've been waiting *months* to start this blog.

If you want to learn a little about me, go here.   As you can see, I'm not incredibly overweight.  I'm pretty good at covering the belly.  I actually take pride in my ability to properly dress my body.  (Must be all the years spent working as an assistant manager for Wet Seal, Inc.)

It's once you get past the clothes that you will notice how soft my stomach is.  Take my belly button for example - it makes a frowning face as opposed to a circle.  It's sad because it realizes the ugly truth: belly fat is dangerous.

According to the Mayo Clinic:
      The trouble with belly fat is that it's not limited to the extra layer of padding located just below the skin (subcutaneous fat). It also includes visceral fat — which lies deep inside your abdomen, surrounding your internal organs.
      Although subcutaneous fat poses cosmetic concerns, visceral fat is associated with far more dangerous health consequences. That's because an excessive amount of visceral fat produces hormones and other substances that can raise blood pressure, negatively alter good and bad cholesterol levels and impair the body's ability to use insulin (insulin resistance). An excessive amount of any fat, including visceral fat, also boosts estrogen levels. All of this can increase the risk of serious health problems, including:

  • -Cardiovascular disease
  • -Stroke
  • -Type 2 diabetes
  • -Breast cancer
  • -Colorectal cancer

Wow, scary!  I don't know about you guys-- but that's more than enough motivation to get my butt moving.

I do have two other reasons for getting in shape.  My daughter and son.  I want to have enough energy to keep up with them.  I want to run around, play at the playground and go, go, go for the hours that they need.  I don't want to be a sideline parent- I want to be in on the action.  I can't fully do that unless I get healthy.  (I do also want to be a MILF.  Shallow?  Maybe.  The truth?  Yes!)

I'm not going to diet or participate in any type of radical behavior that will negatively affect my health.  I plan on continuing to eat healthy while pursuing a more active lifestyle.  On this blog I plan to discuss my journey, share meal plans, recipes, activities, stories of others on their health journey, and much, much more-- all the while, laughing at my uncoordinated behind.  (Really, I run like a girl and I am *not* agile or flexible in any sense of the word.)

I do feel it's necessary to stress that this blog is here to promote healthy living and not to perpetuate negative feelings towards certain body-types.  I don't want to be part of the machine that states woman need to be stick thin without curves.  That is not my goal.

I weighed myself this morning and I was at 141 pounds.  Yesterday morning I was 145 and on Friday I was at 139.  I'm  going to stick with the starting weight of 145 pounds.  I am 5' 2" tall so, that puts my BMI (Body Mass Index) at 26.5.  Not bad, but in the overweight category for my height.  My goal weight is 120 pounds.  That will put my BMI at 21.95 which is mid-range in the "healthy" department.

Every month I will be writing up a list of goals that I will be posting on the blog.  You guys will get to see first hand what I am and am not accomplishing.  I'm always looking for suggestions, new recipes, etc - so share away!  I hope you guys will follow me on this journey and check back frequently on my progress.  I will be sharing many pictures and trying to write as honestly as possible about the struggles associated with getting in shape the healthy way.  I will be posting a new blog every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (plus occasionally on the weekends.)

  3. Azia I love this blog! I will be following it and reading up ALL the time!
    Last month I started eating healthy and trying to be more active as well. I checked my blood pressure at work a few months ago and it was ridiculously high for someone my age. I have been at it for a little over a month and have NEVER felt better. My stress level and anxiety have gone down and I finally realized how much CRAP I was eating and putting into my body. I have so much more energy and confidence, I love it!

    A few tips to share:
    Joggy Coach is a great app because it tracks distance ran (or walked, which I sometimes prefer), time and calories burned
    My Fitness Pal is also a fantastic app! When I started, I put in my weight, height, age, lifestyle, etc and it calculated a healthy amount of calorie and fat intake. It has a huge database of foods and the ability to add foods. Everyday I input my exercise and food intake and I know where I'm standing! You can add friends and really support each other.     I quit eating red meat and went to chicken and fish! Red meat is SO full of cholesterol and fat it's disgusting.
