ABC's Of Getting Fit!

A is for Alcohol - Though it has been suggested that drinking one glass of alcohol a day (for both men and women) has it's health benefits (ie- reducing the risks of heart disease) : alcohol is packed with calories and increases your appetite.  If you must drink, try to keep it to one and something such as red wine.

B is for Buddies - Humans are social by nature.  When you have a buddy that has the same fitness goals as you, you motivate each other.  Programs like Fit Friends and having a work out buddy is crucial to staying on track.

C is for Calcium - Calcium is a crucial nutrient that fuels the human body, aids with bone and dental strength amongst many other benefits such as: preventing obesity, PMS, kidney stones and colon cancer.  Be sure to drink your (almond) milk!

D is for Density - Eating a diet rich in nutrient dense foods (foods with a higher nutrient content than caloric content) will set you up for fitness success!  (A few examples of these foods are asparagus, spinach, brown rice, almonds, black beans, cod and tofu.)

E is for Eat - One in 200 women in America suffer from anorexia, whereas 2 in 300 women are believed to suffer from bulimia.  Starving your body of foods and nourishment is a death sentence and the exact opposite of getting in shape.  It's hard to remind yourself of this, especially with the pressure women are under to look like celebrities.  Mama's Got A Big Belly! is focused on living healthy and taking care of your body, not trying to look thin.

F is for Fiber - Fiber not only "keeps you regular" but is also contributes for lowering your risk of diabetes.   There are two types of fiber- insoluble fiber (pushes your stools through your digestive system) and soluble fiber (lowers glucose and cholesterol levels.)  Fiber rich foods include flax seed, peas, legumes, apples, bananas, most green leafy vegetables and whole wheat, plus many more!

G is for Grapes - Yes, the delicious, sweet fruit that is plum full with health benefits!  Grapes contain vitamins A, C, B6 and follate as well as other nutrients and antioxidants.  Grapes also aid with constipation, indigestion, migraines, asthma and heart disease!

H is for Hydration - More than 60% of human bodies are made of water, so it only makes sense that staying hydrated is key to getting in shape!  Doctors recommend drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day, especially if you drink caffeine (with dehydrates you!)  Hydration keeps your bodily functions (digestive tract) moving, as well as clearer skin and helping with energy!  Drink up!

I is for Individual Responsibility - You are in control of your destiny!  Until this fact is realized, getting in shape (and every other part of your life) will not be in your hands. "You must take personal responsibility.  You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.  That is something you have charge of." -Jim Rohn

J is for Journal - A study suggests that keeping a food journal can double weight loss.  Writing down daily what you put into your body allows you to become aware of exactly what you are feeding yourself.  Get creative, create an instagram account that is dedicated only to pictures of your meals, start an online journal, a blog, there are many apps like this one from Livestrong that can help you visualize what you are consuming.

K is for Kale - One cup of kale contains 36 calories, 5 grams of fiber, and 15% of the daily requirement of calcium and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), 40% of magnesium, 180% of vitamin A, 200% of vitamin C, and 1,020% of vitamin K. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus.  This an amazing leafy green that you can eat raw, cooked or in smoothies!

L is for Legumes - Beans, peas, lentils are examples of legumes.  Legumes are high protein and low in fat and cholesterol.  (For example, one cup of cooked lentils contains 18 grams of protein and only .75 grams of fat!  Amazing!)

M is for Matcha - Japaneese Matcha Green Tea is a super food- unlike regular green tea, matcha allows you to ingest the entire green tea leaf.  This tea boost energy with 35g of natural, green caffeine per serving, contains 318 mg of fiber, is rich in chlorophyll which aids in detoxing the body and boosts your metabolism!

N is for Nuts - Make nuts a regular part of your snacking now!  Almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts help to lower cholesterol and are packed with protein!

O is for Overcome Fears - Often times people are afraid of failing, which is completely understandable. But, if you never start something, how can you finish?  Overcoming your fears in regards to getting in shape is one of the key first steps in healthy living!

P is for Protein - Lean protein is an important part of maintaining a healthy diet.  Did you know that the optimal time for protein intake is in the morning?  By starting your day off with protein rich foods, your body will feel fuller, longer!

Q is for Quinoa - Quinoa is a gluten free "grain" that is rich in nutrients-- though grain is used rather lightly because quinoa comes from the same food family as chard, spinach and beets!

R is for Replacement Shakes - I know!  It sounds completely unappealing but protein rich, meal replacement shakes are a great way to lose weight while not compromising the nutrients that your body needs.  I often drink a protein shake in the morning with a banana or some toast.  Not to mention that protein shakes can boost your metabolism by 25%.

S is for Stress - When a person is stressed, their body releases something called "cortisol" (the stress hormone!).  When your body is releasing too much cortisol, weight gain occurs because your body cannot keep it's energy levels up to burn fat.  It is also worth mentioning that external factors that come along with stress (not just biological!) can effect healthy living- stress eating, anyone?  Take time to meditate, pray and keep those stresses down!

T is for Take Time Daily - You must make time for yourself every day and do something you love.  Whether that's watching a favorite television show, reading a book, getting your hair done, taking a long bath- do something for YOURSELF!

U is for Understanding - Stay away from the scale as much as you can and understand that getting in shape doesn't happen over night and takes time and dedication!  Also understand that muscles weighs more than fat, so you may see a decrease in your inches but no budge on the scale!

V is for Variety - You have to make sure you are not eating the same thing every day, doing the same exercises, ect. because the monotony will bore you!  There are plenty of activities and healthy foods to give you something different every day!

W is for Whole Foods -Whole Foods are foods that are in their "natural state."  (AKA- unprocessed!)  Fruits, vegetables, whole wheat and (organic) meat are all considered "whole foods."  As to be expected, processed foods are linked to cancer and obesity.

X is for X Out eXcuses -  Do not allow yourself to say things like, "I'll just start tomorrow," or "I'm too out of shape to start going to the gym."  Today is just as good a time as any, and how do you think you get in shape?  By getting your butt to the gym!

Y is for Yoga - Yoga is a practice that focuses on both mind and body through physical poses and breathing.  Physically, the poses, called postures, increase strength and flexibility.  Yoga has been practiced for over 5,000 years!

Z is for Z's - You have to sleep!  Lack of sleep produces the stress hormone cortisol (that tricky guy seems to appear whenever he can), as well as slowing down your metabolism.  It is recommend that adults get between 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

Going Back to Vegetarianism (?)

Over 3 years ago, I decided to become a vegetarian.  It wasn't because I didn't like the taste of meat (growing up-- Steak medium rare to medium was always my FAVORITE)-- but it was the treatment of the animals that slowly got to me.

A majority of animals are raised for slaughter, fed an unnatural diet, and are pumped with antibiotics.  They live in their own waste.  If you are what you eat-- think about what eating an animal like that means for your body!

Food, Inc. is one of the best food documentaries that I've ever watched:

Watch Food Inc HD 720p in Activism & Non-Profit | View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com
I beg you to take the time and watch this documentary.  It isn't shock factor, gore-- but it's very honest and well made.

I started eating meat again before I realized I was pregnant with Abram.  My body was craving it.  And-- your body tells you what it needs, so I gave in.

But, now the pregnancy is over and I'm sorry-- but getting good meat- local, humanely raised, antibiotic free, non-corn fed- is incredibly expensive.

I plan on going back to vegetarianism in the near future.  I've stopped buying meat, minus fish.  (And the occasional German Sausage-- I live in the most German town in Minnesota... Brats and Kraut are a staple and going to be very hard to give up!)  I sometimes feel guilty, because I cook for the household-- so if Momma isn't eating meat, the rest of the family isn't eating meat.  Eva is used to a few non-animal products already (Almond Milk, Daiya, Earth Balance, Boca and Morning Star products)-- but she loves chicken and bacon.  I've tried to explain to her what being a vegetarian is/means and she seems interested.  But, I'm her Mom and she's almost 5.  She wants my approval and ... well, I just don't want to force this on her!

I just wish I didn't have to make this decision!  Why is it so hard to feed animals their natural food?  To raise them in a humane environment?  To not pump them with chemicals?  I don't want my children eating ammonia soaked beef!  Or, eating eggs from a chicken who has never stood up in her entire life-- who lays her eggs in a nest filled with her own feces.

Are any of you vegetarians?  Do any of you live with meat eaters?  How do you find a good balance?

Stevia > Sugar + Chobani Winner Announced!

I've received a few emails inquiring as to what "Stevia" is since a few of the recipes I've posted have called for it.  I decided to dedicate today's post to that very topic, as well as discuss other alternative options to sugar.

When I say the word sugar- I'm talking about the white stuff we all grew up having dumped in our Kool-Aid.  It is empty calories and offers absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever.  Granted, humans are hardwired to crave things like sugar-- the problem is that in previous generations, sugar hasn't been as readily available as it to us.

Granulated sugar consumption is a food less food.  It makes you fat, is incredibly addicting, increases your risk of obesity and diabetes, and raises your cholesterol.

Say no to sugar!

But, want to know what is JUST as bad as sugar?  Artificial sweeteners.

source

Yes, that the beloved Splenda (I see right through you and your chemical make up!)  That's right- Equal, Sweet-n_Low, NutraSweet- they are chemicals and are not real sugar.  They are made of things like aspartame and sucralose.  These chemicals that are tricking your body into thinking it's getting the sugar it is craving is also causing depression, anxiety, fuzzy vision, obesity, diabetes, cancer, the list goes on and on.

Stay away from them, okay?

source
So, that brings me to Stevia.  Stevia is 100% *natural*.  It comes from the herb Stevia Rebaudiana.  There are some discrepancies in it's history of usage- some say it's been around with native tribes since the 1800's but there is also some information that dates it further back than that!  To make Stevia, they extract the water from its leaves, then there is a clarification and crystallization process to follow.

Stevia helps to regulate your digestive track and has no glycemic index (aka- doesn't affect your blood sugar levels).  It is also 10x sweeter than sugar, so you hardly need to use any while cooking.  I use NuNaturals powdered Stevia, but it is available in raw forms and a liquid form that is very popular.

Some other alternatives to sugar are:

Pooh *always* buys local honey!
Honey!  We always have honey on hand and make sure we buy local.  Food Safety news found that 75% of the honey sold in U.S Grocery stores isn't even "honey."  Buy your honey from a local, trusted manufacturer at a farmers market, food co-op, and yes- even Trader Joe's!  But- store brand honey (think Walgreens, CVS, etc) is bad news bears.  I use honey when making granola bars, drizzled over fruit and added to warm or iced tea.  Honey (the good stuff) is full of vitamins and has a low glycemic index.

source

Another staple in our household is one of my favorites to drizzle on oats or baked goods and add to smoothies- Agave nectar!  (Uh-gah-vay).  Agave is super popular amongst vegans, and like honey- has a low glycemic index and contains vitamins that are gooooood for you!  (Make sure you buy organic Agave!)

Apple-Cinnamon Water

For those in the States, how was your long Labor Day weekend?  Hope you all had time to enjoy the weather, friends, family and all that other good stuff.

I enjoyed all of the above and had a calorie filled weekend.  I tried to be mindful in my eating, but we were at a family gathering on Saturday that resulted in all sorts of frivolity.

Luckily, I didn't gain a pound.  But, I also didn't lose anything either.  So, I'm still sitting here at 144 pounds.  Losing 5 pounds by the end of this month is starting to seem like a pretty far and away goal-- but I'm going to do everything in my power to get there!  (Yay for positive thinking!)

After a weekend like the one I had- I feel almost hypersensitive to what I'm putting into my body.  I want to flush out any of the bad stuff that could be lingering.

Water is crucial to that process.  According to Mayo Clinic:
Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.
Every morning when I get up-- I put out my pitcher of Apple-Cinnamon water.  It is a small, half gallon pitcher and I refill it twice a day.  (Unless Garrett is home or I have company- then we are looking at at least 4 to 5 refills.)

Apples are high in fiber and full of antioxidants and enzymes that help you digest your food faster.  Apples do not last long in our household.  And, I am getting so excited for the fall-- I love visiting the apple orchards!  And, don't even get me started on cinnamon!  CinnamonWeightLoss.Com is full of information:
When it comes to weight loss, cinnamon is a great ally.  First, it helps control the insulin and cholesterol of the body at healthy levels.  These two are essential in gaining a fit and healthier body.  It helps controls how the body metabolizes fats and carbohydrates.  As such, it helps control the creation of fat and ultimately its deposit into the body.  Furthermore, cinnamon decreases the Low Density Lipoprotein or the “bad cholesterol” while increasing the high density lipoproteins  or “good cholesterol” in the body.
We put cinnamon in and on a ton of different things... I take it in my coffee, sprinkle it on toast, use it in my cereal or oatmeal, on fruit, add it to smoothies- the list goes on an on!

For this particular water, I use:
-1 Apple cut into wedges (Don't spend time removing the core or the seeds: I throw the entire thing in there!)
-1 Cinnamon Stick
-Cold Water

Let it sit on the counter for about 10 minutes to let the flavors set in.  I leave my pitcher on the counter all day with a glass placed in front of it as a reminder to drink up!  Any apple will work, but I've produced the best flavor results with Fuji and Braeburn.  Also, the apples will be good for about 2-3 days!  So you can reuse the same ingredients multiple times.  Just be sure to fill the pitcher up at night and place in the refrigerator until the next day.

Happy Drinking!

Portion Control, Goals & Pen Pals- OH MY!

Can you guys believe it?  It is *already* Friday!?  I don't know about you, but for me the week just flew on by!

I weighed myself this morning and I was at a steady 144 pounds.  Tomorrow, Garrett's Aunt is throwing a meet and greet on Abram's behalf and I'm nervous about all of the food I will shovel into my face.  It's much, much easier to eat right when you are at home.  But, when you are going to a party (with a ton of delicious food!) it becomes challenging.  Garrett reminds me it will be okay, it's our "Faturday" (more on that soon!)

I think about the impending holidays and I get discouraged :  am I really going to lose this weight over a cold, holiday-filled, Minnesota winter?  It's certainly going to be a challenge.  My biggest obstacle may in fact be - portion control.  This Mama CAN EAT! I've always been a "good eater" (according to my Mama).
source

Web MD has an awesome site that shows you the true portion of common foods and if it's not something you are familiar with: prepare to be surprised!  You can be eating all of the "right" foods, but if you are overeating- you are doing your body a disservice!  (And you will not lose weight!)

I will try to keep this in mind this weekend!

But, moving on- tomorrow is the first day of September!  (In my eyes, that means the summer is over and- it's the beginning of my favorite time of the year- Fall!)  Every month I will be posting Monthly Goals that will focus on healthy living.

Do you set goals for yourself every month?

I also wanted to share with you the awesome program: Foodie Pen Pals!  I've participated in this program a few times and it's wonderful!  Lindsay over at the Lean Green Bean runs this awesome food exchange!  Every person who signs up is assigned a partner in the United States and you send each other goodies!  It is really fun!  I'd recommend clicking on the banner below, getting more information and signing up!  You guys have one more day to become September participants!  Otherwise, you can try again next month.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and that you stop back on Monday to see Mama's Big Belly!

Not Your Average Shake

Okay, I don't know about you guys-- but the thought of a meal replacement shake is absolutely *disgusting* to me!  (Can I get a "Hell Yeah" ?  "HELL YEAH!")  But... seriously, if I'm hungry.  I'm hungry.  No liquid diet is going to cure that.

BUT.  (There is alllllways a big fat "but" (or in my case- belly!) right?!)

What if you could drink something absolutely DELICIOUS that will both fulfill a craving and fill you up?  Well... I'm here to share with you TWO of my absolute FAVORITE drinks with you!
---

Do you like coffee?  Then you will absolutely *love*love*LOVE* this drink!

-2 Spoonfuls of instant coffee
-1/2 Cup hot water (to dissolve the coffee)
-1 Scoop vanilla protein powder
-1 Cup dark chocolate almond milk
-Top with ice

It tastes just like your favorite iced-coffee drink but you are packing in protein!
*You could also totally blend this together for a Frappe!*
---

One of my favorite treats is a dreamsicle. (You know, Popsicle on the outside and ice cream on the inside.)  Well, this drink tastes just like that!  *Delicious!*

-1/2 Cup orange juice
-1/2 Cup original almond milk
-1/2 cup water
-1 Scoop vanilla protein powder
-Shake it up and top with ice

(We love Almond Milk in our house- it has completely replaced cow's milk for us-- but if you are a drinker of cows milk, I'm sure you could substitute them in these recipes and get the same scrumptious flavors!)
---

The protein we use in our house is Vanilla Ice cream Syntha-6.  It is by far the *best* protein powder that I've ever used.  It does not taste chalky or leave a bad taste in your mouth.  It is also a whey protein base as opposed to a soy protein- which is huge for us because too much soy in your diet can cause a whole slew of issues.

I've been able to put the protein into other items as well-- including cupcakes!  (Yes, I will share that recipe sometime!)  The results have been fantastic.

Do you guys have a favorite "protein" drink that you make at home?
